TTPP40: Key Lessons Learnt from Tax Manager to Senior Manager

I got an unexpected Teams call from the partner of my team, Sam, minutes before I was due on a client meeting.

She was updating me from a discussion we had a few months back. I’d asked if it would be possible to become senior manager by April 2022, and if so what would I need to do to make it happen.

One thing she needed was agreement from the partners.

At this point, my brain started to think the worst. So I immediately prepared myself for what could be bad news.

So I was then elated and genuinely surprised that I was then asked if I would like to be senior manager from the next day – start of December.

I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited for a promotion. I just wanted to share the news. I think it was the sheer surprise, but I think the leadership decision to do it immediately was spot on. In that moment, and still now, it made me feel very valued and motivated.

There are so many things I’ve learnt from being tax manager to senior manager, so in this episode, I’ve aimed to keep it to the ones that I think have been the most impactful.

This is an episode I’ve really enjoyed doing – it was an exciting moment when I was asked if I wanted to be senior manager, and I’ve been looking forward to sharing what I’ve learnt from this part of my career journey, with the aim of helping you and other tax professionals to progress, develop and improve your tax careers.
